Frequently asked questions
Vegetable-tanned (veg-tan) leather is a traditional, eco-friendly leather made by converting raw hides into a stable material using natural tannins from plants like barks, leaves, and fruits, a process that can take weeks or months. It is prized for its durability, unique natural character, ability to be tooled and molded, and rich patina that develops over time. While it is stiffer than chrome-tanned leather and can stain easily if left unfinished, it produces high-quality, long-lasting goods and has a distinct, pleasant leather scent.
- The process of chrome tanning creates toxic wastewater that has detrimental environmental impact, (especially in the third world).
- Chrome tanned products neither wears well nor lasts very long and can crack after a few months of use.
-Chrome tanned products doesn't appear very natural and often carries a chemical smell.
-Chrome tanned can cause corrosion/pitting on finished steel and stainless steel due to residual chromium salts from the tanning process... don't want that.

Leather comes in all shapes in sizes, but one crucial dimension is the thickness.
Leather thickness is measured using specialized calipers or thickness gauges, which provide readings in units like millimeters or ounces. Ounces, a common North American standard, equate to about 1/64th of an inch or 0.4 mm per ounce, with different leather weights indicating varying thicknesses for different projects.
We like to use leather with in the 1.6mm-1.8mm (4 oz - 4.5oz) range. This is what the Waxy & Pueblo leathers typically run, The Camouflage tends to run a bit thinner but not noticeably. This thickness gives us the flexibility along with the rigidity we are looking for while offering some heat protection.
No, No it will not.
The Hilt may reduce the heat transferred from the handguards to the hand but it is in no means a solution for protecting yourself from burns.
TO BE CLEAR THIS PRODUCT IS NOT FIRE PROOF OR FIRE TREATED. IT IS NOT A FORM OF PERSONAL PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT FOR THE USER TO PROTECT THEM SELF FROM BURNS! USE WITH CAUTION.
Hilt is simply a comfortable stylish buffer from you handguard to your hand.
There are many different methods that would work but I tend to use the simplest solution.
Simply use a cotton t-shirt or cloth and massage the area. This tends to buff out minor scratches, but what's wrong with a little character?
Deep scratches would requires a more intensive restoration process but at that point save some money and just buy another. 😐
It's up to you!
Personally I do not as it can change the look of the leather (make it darker). I like my leather gruff, not a pocket book...
but if you would like to condition your leather listen to the pros below.

We used Rita 25 Tiger thread 0.6 mm. Seems to work well and is forgiving to stitch with.
Check out the video below to learn how to hand stitch leather! This is the method we use to bind our products.
